This article discusses the importance of walls in the existence and preservation of traces, as well as their attribution to particular producers and extraction of paleoenvironmental inferences. Micromorphology is necessary for a complete description and identification of wall modifications, and is also useful for identifying insect behaviors preserved in trace fossils. Taphonomy can sometimes make it difficult to identify micromorphological characters.
